Who has home births with LCM? Occupations

Who has homebirths, anyway?

In the first three years of Local Care Midwifery, PLLC, a great variety of folks have joined our practice, received attentive midwifery care and yes, given birth in their own homes. (Over 93% of clients who started labor at home with LCM, birthed safely and sweetly, at home.) Who would do that? Well, a

 great variety of folks would!

Listed below is sample of the variety of occupations that I have happily written on birth certificates since 2009. Unless stated otherwise, the home birthing mother's occupation is listed.

(While all moms work during pregnancy, this LCM mom actually worked during her labor!)

The Work of Midwifery & Mothering

Midwifery is hard work.

Mothering is hard work.
Combining midwifery and mothering is really hard work.

At the age of 21, I started work in the world of midwifery. I was a midwife assistant in a busy planned home birth practice. I saw various midwives trying to balance the demands of children and demands of pregnant/laboring/birthing/postpartum clients. I saw that sometimes the child won, and sometimes the client won. But when torn between the two, the midwife hardly ever won. To Read More

Sharing My Birthday:

Three years ago, I started a small, business, Local Care Midwifery, in Troy, NY. I provide health care for women and attend planned home births. As a NY Licensed Midwife, I get to care for woman of all ages. As my own employer, I also get to see sweet babies born at home, two to four times a month. I love my work!

My birthday is in the middle of the summer, July eleventh. It has always been one of my favorite days. READ MORE

HomeBirth Fundamentalism: Part 2

Unassisted birth
Free birth
DIY birth
Unhindered birth
From Wikipedia:
Unassisted childbirth refers to the process of intentionally giving birth without the assistance of a medical or professional birth attendant. It is also known as freebirth, DIY (do-it-yourself) birth, unhindered birth, unassisted home birth, and couples birth.

Several years ago, I was asked to attend a home birth but to promise that I would do nothing no mater what happened. I clarified, "Even if the baby is in trouble and is not breathing?" The answer was "Yes." I said no.
Earlier this week, I was interviewed by someone who was looking for a midwife who would agree to do no prenatal care, order no blood tests or ultrasounds but agree to come to the birth, "just in case". I said no.
While I have an intellectual understanding of why some are drawn to these things, I choose to not participate. As a planned home birth midwife, I choose to participate in prenatal, birth and postpartum care with my clients. Read More
