Britax "Chaperone" Carseat Recall

The carseat manufacturer Britax is recalling over 14,000 of its "Chaperone" carseats due to a defect with the safety harness that may not properly restrain a child in the event of a motor vehicle collision. While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is unaware of any injuries due to the defects in these seats manufactured from September 2010 to April 2011, owners of these seats should contact Britax at 1(888) 427-4829 or at www.britaxusa.com.

Britax will be giving consumers and retailers a remedy kit to ensure the harness adjuster is securely attached by February 6, 2012, and will continue to replace seats with detached harness adjusters until that date.

For more information including model numbers of the affected seats, visit the NHTSA website and read their press release concerning this recall here.

LCM by the NUmbers: 2009-Present, All inclusive Cesarean Birth Rate

This week, we have been presenting Local Care Midwifery's MANA Stat data. For a practice's delivery rates, MANA Stats only counts clients who start labor with a practice. This means that women who transfer to a hospital practice because a medical condition such as extreme high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia or for an induction due to extreme post dates are not included. Both emotionally and intellectually, it seems to us that all clients in that  are under our care when delivery or induction is indicated should 'count'  in the statistics. We call this the inclusive delivery rate.

SInce our start in 2009, LCM has had a total of 5 Cesarian births for all of our clients. This gives us an inclusive Cesarian rate of 7%, or conversely, a vaginal delivery rate of 93%. This puts us well within the World Health Organization's recommended C/S rate of 5-15%. This show that evidenced base midwifery care is alive and well in the Capital District of NY. It goes without saying that our moms, partners and babies that need a hospital birth, whether for a vaginal or surgical birth, still have LCM beside them the whole way, for labor, birth and especially for postpartum care.

LCM by the NUmbers: 2009 to Present, Waterbirth

Our series continues with land versus water

From 2009 to the present, 20% of LCM moms have had water births. The rest, birthed on land.

Birth is good, whether initially into water or air. Thanks to all of you for choosing such loving starts for your babies.

MANA Stats does not track use of water in labor, they just  track the births that actually occur in water. From observation, I can tell you that the majority of LCM moms spend some amount of time in water during their labors. That might be a quick and refreshing shower, a long tub soak, or, hours and hours in a dedicated labor/birth tub.

LCM By the Numbers: 2009 to Present, First-Time and Experienced Moms

Midwives' Alliance of North America Statistics Project (MANA Stats) is a wonderful tool for understanding and tracking practice outcomes. Local Care Midwifery, PLLC provides evidenced based care and tracks that care with MANA Stats.

Ready for more good news? Evidence-based care works!

Since our inception, Local Care Midwifery, PLLC has cared for women having their first baby and women having later babies.

According to MANA Stats, LCM's first-time moms have a 91% vaginal birth rate and a 78.3% home birth rate. Wow!

With LCM's experienced moms, the vaginal and the home birth rate are both 100%. Incredible!

The caveat here is that women who do not start labor under the care of LCM are not counted in these MANA stats. For example, there is one dear LCM mom who transferred to a hospital practice at 42 1/2 weeks of pregnancy. She had an induction and a lovely vaginal delivery of her second child at the hospital with Michelle Doyle at her side. She had planned a home birth and transferred prior to starting labor. The inclusion of this data gives LCM's experienced moms a 100% vaginal delivery rate and a 97.6% home birth rate. Not too shabby!

LCM By the Numbers: 2009 to Present Total Vaginal Rates

Ta, da! Local Care Midwifery's data input to Midwife Alliance of North America Statistics Project (MANA Stats) is complete:

From August 2009 to December 2011, 98.4% of our clients that started labor with us, had vaginal births.
That is a 1.6% Cesarean section rate. Wow!

Also, 93.8% of our clients that started labor with us had the planned home birth that they were hoping for. Amazing!

Since our beginning in 2009, LCM has provided high quality, compassionate midwifery care for women and birthing families of the Capital District. This claim is supported by data, MANA's cold, hard, prospective data.

Thanks to all the women, families (including my own) and the wonderful midwife assistants that have helped make this possible.
