A client and dear friend suggested that I this NPR story on Afghanistan, babies, women and midwives. What a wonderful piece of journalism, filled with information, passion and hope. Afghanistan has one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world; midwives are beginning to turn that tide in the right direction. Listen to the story.

Infant sleep positioners: Consumer Warning - Risk of Suffocation
AUDIENCE: Consumers, Pediatrics
ISSUE: FDA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a warning not to use Infant sleep positioners. In the last 13 years, the federal government has received 12 reports of babies known to have died from suffocation associated with their sleep positioners. Most of the babies suffocated after rolling from the side to the stomach.
BACKGROUND: The most common types of sleep positioners feature bolsters attached to each side of a thin mat and wedges to elevate the baby’s head. The sleep positioners are intended to keep a baby in a desired position while sleeping. They are often used with infants under 6 months old.
RECOMMENDATION: Consumers are warned to stop using infant positioning products. Never put pillows, sleep positioners, comforters, or quilts under the baby or in the crib. Always place a baby on his or her back at night and during nap time. See the Consumer Update for links to additional information, including product photos.

ISSUE: Possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product. The FDA has determined that while the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract.
BACKGROUND: The recall of these powder infant formulas includes certain Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers, and certain Similac powder product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans. See the Product Photo page. The recall includes powder infant formulas sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean. No Abbott liquid infant formulas are impacted.
RECOMMENDATION: If symptoms are noted and persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted. Products with affected lot numbers should be returned to Abbott at no cost to the consumer. To immediately find out if the product in your possession is included in this recall, parents and caregivers should visit www.similac.com/recall, and type in their lot number to determine if their product is affected, or call (800) 986-8850.

Madeline Jean, September, 16, 2010
Hard to believe that anyone could sleep through a Nebraska Huskers' game; guess it is a lot of hard work being a newborn. No worries, in her family, Madeline Jean will have plenty of other games to watch. Sweet dreams!
